FROM BOGOMILISM TO NEO-BOGOMILISM
Bogomilism is usually seen as a link in the big chain of transmission of gnosis, between antic Gnosticism and Western hetherodox dualist movements.
Although histories and religion studies are inclined to accept such view, it is actually far from being unchangelled, specially in Balkan historiography. The other important point is that research of Bogomilism in 19th century went together with the processes of national emancipation.
In ex-Yugoslavia Bogomilism was not only matter of academic discussion but part of cultural memory, which was specially emphasized in last twenty years. While Bogomilism plays significant role in concepts of national identity, on the other hand some contemporary religious groups are trying to revive it in the other way, too. Their attempts are still underresearched in scholarship.
