On Wednesday, 30 May 2012, from 12:15 to 13:15, the governor of the Bank of Finland ERKKI LIIKANEN will deliver a public lecture "The Great Recession and its long shadow: Youth unemployment" in the Senate Hall of the University of Tartu.
The hour-long lecture will focus on the economic policies tackling youth unemployment in Europe. The financial crisis has brought unemployment back to the centre of European policy debates. Shocks and institutions have piled employment adjustment pressures especially on the young, and youth unemployment has risen to record levels. The relocation of the unemployed youth to new jobs is a pressing issue, as prolonged unemployment at the start of the working career entails substantial long-term costs for both individuals and the whole society. Accordingly, European economies should gear their labour market institutions to support the young people's position in the labour market. This will pay off in the future in terms of competitiveness, potential output, welfare and public finances.
Erkki Liikanen is the governor of the Bank of Finland since July 2004. He is also chairman of the Board of the Bank of Finland, member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank, and governor of the International Monetary Fund for Finland. Before that, he served two terms as a member of the European Commission, being responsible for enterprise and information society, and budget, personnel and administration, respectively. Erkki Liikanen has been a member of the Finnish Parliament for 18 years and also the minister of finance. Mr Liikanen has an MA in political sciences, majoring in economics, from the University of Helsinki.
The lecture will be held in English. Everybody is welcome to attend!
