The students who have successfully passed the course will get certificate of University of Tartu.
Course description:
Based on video-introductions and documentary videos and audio-examples, the participants will be empirically guided to thorough knowledge about the sound character of common microphones for live-engineering and studio recordings.
- Introduction into the technical buildup of a) dynamic-, b) condenser-, c) ribbon-microphones;
- Comparison from factory provided polar-patterns and frequency charts with recorded audio examples and analyzer's measurement results.
- Sound-characteristics of different musical instruments and how to pick them up with the given/best suited microphone(s)
- The importance of side aspects (e.g. room modes, reflective surfaces, spilling/crosstalk) - Fixing problems and improving the results.

Written homework, audio recordings and video documentation of work done.
Course outcomes:
The student who has successfully passed the course
- will develop a 'taste' for sound and learn how to realize it straightforwardly;
- can choose appropriate microphones based on the knowledge gained during the course and minimizing "try and error" factor of doing it;
- is able to choose appropriate microphone type for live-situation and studio recording and has wider knowledge about the characteristics and applications of standard-microphones for live and studio;
- is able to connect theoretical information with 'real live experience'.
