Election Committee approves candidates list for Rector’s election
The list of candidates was approved in a meeting held on 22nd December by the five-member Rector’s Election Committee elected by the University Council.
Professor Ene Ergma was nominated as a candidate by the UT Faculty of Physics and Chemistry, the UT Institute of Technology and 30 UT Professors in Ordinary jointly. The nomination of Professor Volli Kalm was endorsed by the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Medicine. The nomination of Professor Birute Klaas was put forward by the Faculty of Philosophy.
A public debate will be held between the candidates at UT Assembly Hall at 4 p.m. on 11 January 2007.
The Rector’s election meeting will be held at the UT Assembly Hall on 18 January 2007 at 12 Noon. The election will take place in a 295-member Electoral College consisting of all members of the University Council, the members of all Faculty Councils, and all UT Professors in Ordinary. The candidate receiving the votes of at least 148 electors will be declared elected.
The Election Committee will make a recommendation to the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Estonia to appoint a new Rector who will assume office as of 29 January 2007.
