European History Goes Online - UT participates in launch of free history database
From the beginning of December a new online database EGO/Europäische Geschichte Online/European History Online containing 500 years of European history was made availabe for public worldwide. The Faculty of Theology at theUniversity of Tartu participated in the launch.
What connects Paris with Budapest and Vienna, Prague with London, Leuven with Wrocław or Tartu with Zurich? The experience of a "shared" history – of exchange and cooperation, but also of conflicts and exclusion. In the future, they will also be linked by a European publishing project: EGO/Europäische Geschichte Online/European History Online, which traces the varied history of Europe in the modern period from the perspective of communication and transfer.
EGO/European History Online crosses national, disciplinary and methodological boundaries to cover 500 years of modern European history. Ten thematic strands bring together processes of intercultural exchange whose influence extended beyond state, national and cultural borders. They range from religion, politics, scholarship and law to art and music, as well as to economics, technology and the military. The contributions link to images, primary sources, statistics, animated and interactive maps, as well as audio and film clips.
Over 200 contributions will be published by 2013. About 75 contributions will be accessible following the launch. The languages of publication are German and English. The EGO at the IEG Mainz has been funded by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 2009, and will receive further support from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation – DFG).
