The Grand Opening of the New Academic Year
The grand opening ceremony will take place in university Assembly Hall on Monday, 29th of August at 10 am.
Traditionally, university recognises the best academic staff in four main research areas: humaniora, socialia, realia et naturalia and medicina. The best of the best among teaching staff are selected by students and they will receive a silver badge and an award chequeequal toa university professor's monthly wages.
In the academic year of 2010/2011 the best teaching staff in humaniora was Pille Põiklik, assistant in English philology in Faculty of Philosophy. The best in socialia was Kristel Ruutmets, a lecturer in didactics from Faculty of Social Sciences and Education. In realia et naturalia, the most appreciated teacher was Koit Herodes, senior lecturer in analytical chemistry of the Faculty of Science and Technology. In medicina area the students voted most for Mihkel Zilmer, a professor in medical biochemistry of the Faculty of Medicine.
The opening speech will be given by UT Rector Professor Alar Karis. New students will also be addressed by the Minister of Science and Education of Estonia, Mr Jaak Aaviksoo; the Mayor of Tartu, Mr Urmas Kruuse and the Chairman of University Student Union, Alo Lõoke. Special greeting from freshmen will be delivered by Piia Puuraid, 1st year student in journalism and communications.
