Mariann Raisma will continue as the Director of the University of Tartu Museum
On June 20, the Senate of the University of Tartu elected Mariann Raisma to fill the position of the Director of the University of Tartu Museum.
“Mariann Raisma has managed to make the University Museum an attractive centre for introducing the research history of the University. Her vision for the future was also convincing, including balanced amounts of bold dreams and realistic considerations,” says Art Leete, Member of the Senate, Professor of Ethnology, and Head of the Institute of Arts of the University of Tartu. “But I have to admit that the other candidate that reached the final round also performed boldly.”
Raisma, who was re-elected as the Director, highlights creation of new expositions, active exhibiting, high-level educational programmes, closer cooperation with the University, and development of the historic environment on the Toome Hill as the main directions of activities of the University of Tartu Museum.
“The last four years have brought a lot of changes in the development of the museum – we opened the Observatory, the University Treasury and the Mad Scientist’s Office, paid more attention to educating and educational events, and several restoration projects, and structural changes within the museum were completed. Yet, several important changes still need to be implemented,” Raisma says. “We would like the University of Tartu Museum to be a place where one can discover the world and be inspired by the history of science as well as ideas that have changed the world. In order to achieve this, the Toome Hill must be developed in addition to the scientific heritage – one of the greatest projects is creating a visitor-friendly, innovative and content-rich exposition of medicine at the Old Anatomical Theatre. Also, developing the Toome Hill as an attractive environment in cooperation with the city.”
The director of the University of Tartu Museum is elected by the Senate of the University by public competition for five years pursuant to the procedure established by the Rector.
