Sulev Kõks was appointed visiting professor at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy
In the recognition of a long-lasting successful research cooperation between the researchers of the University of Tartu and Vietnam, Professor of the University of Tartu Sulev Kõks was given the title of a visiting professor of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam.
The honorary position was announced at the visit of the delegation of the University of Tartu to Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy. The delegation of the University of Tartu, including Vice Rector for Research Marco Kirm, discussed the idea of creating a doctoral students’ programme with the rector of the university of medicine and pharmacy. The partners also looked back at the past cooperation. Two doctoral students from Vietnam study at the University of Tartu.
Professor Sulev Kõks and his team have been developing medical education in Vietnam for a long time and have actively participated in the training of Vietnamese medical teaching staff both in Vietnam and in Estonia. For example, Vietnamese researchers have job shadowed the researchers of the UT Faculty of Medicine.
The cooperation of the UT and Vietnamese researchers is an ambitious and large-scale project, supported by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of the Environment and the World Bank.
So far, cooperation has focussed on orthopaedics, reproductive medicine and stomatology. In addition to Sulev Kõks, the cooperation team with Vietnam includes Dr Aivar Ehrenberg, Professor Andres Salumets, Associate Professor Aare Märtson, Associate Professor Katre Maasalu, Professor Mare Saag and others.
Although Vietnam may seem a distant country, cooperation with them brings along direct benefits to the health of Estonians: as the population as well as the number of diseases in Vietnam are a hundred times bigger, the cooperation helps the Estonian researchers to study the causes of diseases and treatment opportunities faster and better.
