University of Tartu celebrated Peeter Tulviste’s 70th birthday with ceremony
On 28 October, the ceremony to celebrate the 70th birthday of rector emeritus of the University of Tartu Peeter Tulviste took place in the university assembly hall and it was followed by the opening of a bench to his name at Toome Hill. At the ceremony, Tulviste was given the highest award of the Defence League—the White Cross I class decoration.
The opening words of the ceremony were by the Rector of the University of Tartu, Professor Volli Kalm. This was followed by good wishes from Peeter Tulviste’s fellow-student from his time in Moscow University, Professor Emerita of the University of Tartu and academician of the Estonian Academy of Sciences Ene Ergma, former student of Tulviste and UT Professor of Criminology Jüri Saar, Dean of the UT Faculty of Social Sciences and Education and Professor of Psychophysiology Jaanus Harro, rector emeritus of the University of Tartu and first Vice Rector during Peeter Tulviste’s term of office as rector Jaak Aaviksoo, and UT Professor of Cell Biology and Vice Rector for Research during Peeter Tulviste’s term of office as rector Toivo Maimets.
On Toome Hill, a bench bearing the name of Peeter Tulviste was opened, being the first in the series “Benches of good thoughts on Toome Hill”.
At the ceremony, the Defence League awarded Peeter Tulviste with its highest award—the White Cross I class decoration. Previously, only nine people have received this decoration.
