University’s caps and rings available in e-shop
Newly designed cap
The cap has a white velvet base surrounded by a velvet ribbon in dark blue (the main colour of the university) and a black leather peak in front. A cap badge with the portico of the university’s main building and the year 1632 in polished silver is attached to the middle of the velvet ribbon above the cap’s peak. The cap badge is made of 925 silver and its dimensions are 16 × 16 × 12.6 mm.
To order the cap, measure your head circumference in centimetres. As the cap is not worn deep like a baseball cap but on the top of the head, place the tape measure on the forehead and take it around the head horizontally. When you measure diagonally from the nape upwards, for instance, the cap will be too large. The caps come in nine sizes (54–62 cm). If your measured head circumference falls between two sizes, prefer the larger one.
All members and alumni of the university have the right of unlimited duration to wear the university’s cap. See the Statutes of the UT cap for instructions on wearing the cap.
Along with the cap, also the luxurious black velvet cap pouch can be bought. The dimensions of the drawstring pouch are 30 × 40 cm and it bears the silver embroidered Latin compact logo of the university.
Fully upgraded ring
The university ring has a silk-matt silver surface with the grooved black portico of the university’s main building. The ring is made of 925 silver. The ring is available in two band widths: thinner (4.5 × 1.6 mm) and wider (7 × 1.6 mm). Inside the ring, there is an engraving of the year of the founding of the university and room for engraving the wearer’s graduation year.
The ring is made to order and for that, the buyer must know the finger circumference. The ring comes in 20 sizes from 15 to 24 mm, each size 0.5 centimetres apart (15 mm, 15.5 mm, 16 mm, etc.). The ring size is the inside diameter in millimetres. For instance, size 18.5 means that the inside diameter of the ring is 18.5 mm and the finger circumference is about 58 mm. The university ring can be worn on any finger.
The UT e-shop forwards the orders to the jeweller on the last day of each month and the rings will be ready in 1.5 months. For instance, the ring ordered in April will be ready by mid-June at the latest.
Along with the ring, also the black velvet ring pouch can be bought. The size of the drawstring pouch is 7 × 9 cm.
Authors of the cap badge and ring are jewellers and visiting lecturers at Viljandi Culture Academy Maarja Niinemägi, Kertu Tuberg and Merilin Pedastsaar from the jewellery studio Cirrus. According to the authors, the design of the cap badge is inspired by its minimalist form and its surface finishing splendidly accentuates the silhouette of the University of Tartu portico. The symbolic jewellery of the university can be worn in any situation and along with other jewellery.
Just a reminder that the price of the order depends on your role when ordering. When you log in to the e-shop, you will order as an employee of your unit. In that case, the fringe benefits tax is added to the price and an internal invoice is sent to the unit.
