UT Celebrated The 91th Anniversary of Estonian-Language Education
On December 1st, the University of Tartu celebrates the 91th anniversary of acting as Estonia’s national university and providing education in Estonian language. The festivities continued with the torchlit procession through the city.
During the ceremonial meeting, a public lecture was held, the recipients of UT’s 2010 honorary doctorates and regular PhDs received their degrees. Also the name of the recipient of the University of Tartu award for significant contribution to Estonian national identity was announced and the award went to the Estonian writer Mats Traat..
The recipients of UT honorary doctorates included Jaan Einasto, member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences, Professor Vilmos Voigt from Eötvös Loránd university in Hungary, Professor Pekka Topias Männistö from the University of Helsinki, Professor William J. Mitsch from Ohio State University and Professor Emeritus Lars Oreland from Uppsala University.
This year 103 fresh PhDs marked the anniversary, which is the highest number ever. According to UT Rector Alar Karis, this fact shows that the university’s efforts to create better conditions and improve motivation for doctoral studies have been successful. "However, this number is still far from what Estonia actually needs," he added.
