UT Professor Continues as Head of European Research Organization
25.11.2011
University of Tartu professor Toivo Maimets was reelected as the president of the European Molecular Biology Conference on November 21, says ERR.
Founded in 1969, the inter-governmental umbrella organization consists of 27 member countries cooperating in the field of molecular biology and other closely related subjects.
According to Maimets, in the past two years, the organization has consistently managed to increase its budget despite the difficult financial times in Europe.
“Secondly we have expanded our circle of partners,” the biologist said, adding that in fall he had signed a cooperation agreement with representatives from the Republic of South Africa and Singapore. Negotiations with India are still under way, Maimets said.
It should also be noted that these cooperation agreements are not superficial but contain specific obligations for both parties, Maimets said.
With its yearly budget of 20 million euros, the organization mainly gives out short and long term research grants, hosts science conferences and helps young scientists to develop their career.
