Studying as a visiting student
Information for students of the University of Tartu
Studying as a visiting student at another Estonian (or foreign) university is regulated by the UT Study Regulations.
How can I study at another Estonian university as a visiting student?
Students of the University of Tartu can have themselves registered as visiting students and attend lectures and seminars at other universities in Estonia.
Studying as a visiting student at another university will be part of the nominal period of study and no extension is granted for that. You can study as a visiting student on the same terms and conditions as other students at the respective university, i.e. the rules of the host university apply. Make sure to check the deadlines and rules of applying and registering for courses, etc., with the host university before taking up studies there.
The level of teaching is mutually accepted by the universities and the courses completed as a visiting student will be taken into account towards the completion of the curriculum if the student applies for that.
At which Estonian universities can I study as a visiting student?
The students of the University of Tartu can study at the following institutions without paying additional tuition fee:
- Institute of Theology of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church

- Estonian Academy of Arts
- Estonian Aviation Academy
- Tartu Theological Seminary

If you want to become a visiting student at another Estonian university, the institution may charge the tuition fee or refuse to admit you as a visiting student. Sometimes they can offer you other options of study, e.g. as an external student. For more information, contact the respective university.
What documents do I need to be registered as a visiting student?
If you want to become a visiting student, remember that your visiting student status must have a purpose: to study something that would supplement your studies at the University of Tartu. For that, you will need to communicate with both the University of Tartu and the host university.
Study plan
Before becoming a visiting student at another Estonian university, you can ask the UT to evaluate how the planned courses would fit into your UT curriculum. For that, submit a study plan to your programme manager along with an annex that contains a list of the courses to be taken at another Estonian university. The study plan must be accompanied by the syllabi of the courses to be taken at the other university.
The RPL committee of your curriculum will review the study plan within 14 days. Once you have received the approved study plan from the RPL committee, you can enter the courses in the visiting student application. The study plan will be preserved by the faculty/college.
Once your studies as a visiting student are over, take the completed evaluation sheet (or the transcript of records) to the dean’s office to prove your visiting studies and annex your study results to the study plan.
If necessary, you can make changes to the study plan, i.e. submit a new annex to the study plan. The RPL Committee will assess the changes to the study plan. According to the data in the study plan, the courses completed as a visiting student will be entered to the UT Study Information System.
Visiting student application
If you are a student of the University of Tartu and wish to study as a visiting student at another Estonian university, submit an application to the dean of the faculty/director of the college.
The application must specify the courses you want to take outside the University of Tartu and it must be approved by the host university. If the host university also wants an original of the application, prepare the application in two copies or fill in the respective form by the host university, as well. Take signed application to the dean’s office of your faculty.
After you have been registered as a visiting student, you will get an evaluation sheet from the dean’s office of your faculty. The evaluation sheet will prove your studies at another Estonian university. After completing the courses, have the evaluation sheet signed by the host university. Once the visiting studies have been completed, annex the evaluation sheet to your study plan.
If you study at Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn University or Estonian University of Life Sciences, you will not need the evaluation sheet, as these universities will issue a transcript of records to prove the studies.
