Tartu - City of Good Thoughts
Tartu is a unique university town with a young population. Since the establishment of the University of Tartu in 1632, Tartu has been the centre for academics, scientists, and students from all over the world.
The University of Tartu has 4 faculties and operates in 5 cities. Most of the university is located in Tartu; however, there are colleges in Pärnu, Viljandi and Narva and a representation in Tallinn.
Tartu is also home to the Estonian University of Life Sciences, the Baltic Defence College and several other education institutions. With so many higher education institutions in town, Tartu inevitably attracts a lot of talent and innovation from Estonia and abroad.
English language is the most-used language of international communication in academic circles of the university. English and Russian is broadly used in everyday life, though the younger generation prefers English. Taxi and bus drivers will speak some English and Russian as well documents in the migration office are available in both languages. A lot of signage in the streets and public places is in English, as are the menus in restaurants.
The number of WiFi areas is growing constantly, and WiFi can be accessed in many pubs, hotels and public buildings.
