Government session to be held at the University of Tartu to mark the centenary of Estonia’s national university

Tomorrow, on 5 December, the Government of the Republic of Estonia will hold the government session, cabinet meeting and press conference at the University of Tartu to mark the 100th anniversary of Estonia’s national university.

Government ministers together with the leaders of the University of Tartu visit together the Estonian National Museum and the photo exhibition “Beautiful Youth”, which portrays students of the national university throughout the century. After lunch the session of the Government of Estonia starts at 14 in the University of Tartu Council Hall.

Prime Minister Jüri Ratas and Rector of the University of Tartu Toomas Asser present their greetings in the formal part of the session. Art historian Kadri Asmer, chief organiser of the centenary events of Estonia’s national university, speaks about the founding of Estonia’s national university one hundred years ago. Then the government session and cabinet meeting continue behind closed doors, and members of the university’s Rector’s Office make a presentation “The University of Tartu into the world’s top 100 universities”.

The government’s press conference starts at 16 in the University of Tartu Senate Hall. The Government Office will make a live webcast of the press conference.

After the press conference the government members pay a visit to the University of Tartu Institute of Genomics, where Rector Toomas Asser will also host a reception to government members and organisers of the centenary events of Estonia’s national university.

In the evening the government and university members go to the Vanemuine Theatre to watch the drama “Faehlmann”, which first premiered in 1982 on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the University of Tartu.
