PROGRAMME: Master's in Information Technology Law

Why did you choose to study this programme?

How can we make life easier? Everyone ponders the answer to this question when completing an assignment. The good news is that technology has the answer. I started the journey to discover the solution to this question on my way to becoming a lawyer. While I was developing my bachelor’s thesis about smart legal contracts, I matched two of my passions: law and technology. Since my dad and mom are system engineers, in some way, I got involved in that environment too. I must confess that ever since I was a child, I have been attracted to the calm that technology produces in my everyday life, which for me, is the best way to optimise processes and reduce stress in this fast world. As a result, I researched blockchain technology, e-commerce, and smart cities. I would say all of this triggered my curiosity and passion for technology. Therefore, all this research led me to the top university in the Baltics, the University of Tartu. Thus, I decided it was time to take a step forward. One of the things that impressed me the most in the master’s programme of the University of Tartu was the variety of subjects offered besides the practical training in the IT field.

Why Estonia?

I knew my life had a great purpose when I became a lawyer. Immediately upon I realised that I wanted to specialise in my career in the IT field, I did a deep search of the countries that efficiently develop a digital culture, and I found Estonia at the top of the list. Consequently, I found Estonia as a country that was not afraid, like me, to bet on new things. I realise that public services connected to technology, voting online, and the possibility of being an e-resident are true and possible. So I said, why not? It was serious when I promised myself to get out of my comfort zone. Hence, I moved to Tartu, also known as the city of good thoughts, where I am convinced to become a distinguished digital lawyer in a demanding world.

PROGRAMME: Bachelor's in Science and Technology

Why did you choose to study this programme?

Although the science is difficult, complicated, and confusing; I believe it is one of the most creative and beautiful industries to work in. I choose the international bachelor’s programme “Science and Technology” for a number of reasons. First of all, the structure of the degree is unique compared to other countries because, during the first three semesters, students will be given general knowledge of natural science and how to work in laboratories. When young people have some idea about science, only then they will choose a suitable specialisation among the three. Secondly, the programme consists of various courses, so after graduation, students can work in any field of natural science. Lastly, the teaching staff comprises highly qualified professors.

Why Estonia?

My interest in Estonia has always been drawn as an amazing country in North Europe. However, despite the excellent university and the programme, I decided to move to Estonia for several reasons. It is a developed country with a thriving economy and a low unemployment rate. The government also offers foreigners the option to stay for 9 months after graduating from the university in order to look for a job. Accommodation and food can be found at affordable prices, and employment is available for students. Estonia has a great ecology. Forests cover more than half of the territory. People can travel around and enjoy nature’s beauty. There are rivers, bogs, islands, and a lot of wetlands.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Software Engineering

Why did you choose to study this programme?

Since my childhood, I have always been fond of Computers and Software and how real-world problems are solved with quick easy clicks using the software. This made me choose my bachelor’s in the field of Computer Science and I started falling in love with the vast domain of computer science and technology even more. After working in Information Technology Industry as a Cyber Security Analyst for about 2 years, it was time for me to choose the specialisation where my interest lies.  I have chosen the master’s programme in Software Engineering at the University of Tartu that is designed so beautifully keeping in mind the whole scenario and practical aspects of the IT Industry.

Why Estonia?

2 years back, when I started my search towards finding a perfect University and country that aligns with my Goals, Coincidently I found the University of Tartu, Estonia, considered among the best universities in Europe. When I got to know more about Estonian Culture, Nature, and e-Estonia and how exciting it was for digital natives, tech-savvy entrepreneurs, and ambitious startups, it was impossible for a Tech-savvy guy like me to not be a part of this awesome nation and explore its Culture. Thus, No Surprise I am here! Now being here in Tartu, a youthful city in Estonia, for some time, I realised that the decision of choosing Tartu as my next home to study master’s was the best decision I have ever made!

PROGRAMME: Master's in Bioengineering

Why did you choose to study this programme?

Bioengineering is one of the most interesting fields where you merge biology with engineering through various channels. This field has eminent applications in two of the most crucial domains of our lives, drug delivery, and environmental biotechnology and bioeconomy. Having a pharmaceutical background and having been working for years in nanotechnological modifications of drug delivery systems made me pursue the MSc degree in Bioengineering as an important step in my career advancement. The Bioengineering programme offered by the University of Tartu is unique as it offers three specialisation options, one of which was drug design which is my main specialty. Elsewhere, Bioengineering programmes are more general or focused on the environmental field of studies. Thereby, it offers not only a directly related perspective of Bioengineering on pharmaceuticals but also provides an overview of other applications of Bioengineering.

Why Estonia?

I came to Estonia according to a recommendation by a friend who lives in Tallinn. Then, I started to read a lot about the University of Tartu and was impressed by its history and the architecture of its main buildings, as I am a big fan of ancient buildings, I even fall in love with them. Estonia is the perfect mix for my personality; a Hi-Tech country yet holding history within. A modern country; with special care for greenery and a beach. A technology hub: yet arts reside in its core. I wouldn’t have wanted more. And after coming to Estonia, I would add to this special mix and on top of it, friendly people.

PROGRAMME: Bachelor's in Business Administration

Why did you choose to study this programme?

To be blunt, I did not even consider another programme as Business Administration as business was the subject I always wanted to study. Since my childhood, I have been selling some useless things from home, and that is how I bought myself my first phone :-) I have chosen Business Administration because I am convinced that I will always use the knowledge I am studying right now. The University of Tartu provided me with everything I asked for. I thought that it would be hard for me to study in another country, but the warmth and friendliness of this university helped me to overcome all of my fears. Moreover, I love meeting people here who have the same interests as mine. Therefore, I think there would not be any better specialisation for me than Business Administration and the University of Tartu made me sure of that.

Why Estonia?

Since I always wanted to live and study in Europe, Estonia was my first choice to apply. This is because of the fresh air and great conditions to live in. The University of Tartu is the best university in Estonia, and it is highly ranked in the world. This was a big opportunity for me to make my dreams come true. At first, I was not sure about it as it is far away from my homeland but as soon as I arrived here and took my first breath, every fear and doubt disappeared. I immediately found lots of friends and it made my homesickness less painful. I was and am still 100% sure that I have chosen the right place to study.

PROGRAMME: Master's in International Relations and Regional Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I chose this particular master’s programme as it fits my professional interests. I want to deepen my knowledge and develop abilities in the field of international affairs. At the same time, I have the opportunity to focus my attention on a specific region and its associated conflicts and to discover how I can apply the general theoretical framework in these particular situations. Another reason was the ease of surfing through the university’s website to find more details and get in touch with the academic staff and students. I encountered a lot of professionalism coming from the university’s employees during the application process and this weighted very much in my decision to come here.

Why Estonia?

Estonia is ideal in terms of location, at the border of Europe and Russia, political openness, valuing gender equality, and being a member of several essential international organizations. Tartu is among the best options in academic experience and social life. It is a student city with a beautiful center and nature that I really enjoy during my free time. Furthermore, the digital services from this country represent a bright future for society and are also reflected in the university’s performances. It has modern equipment which facilitates interactive courses and special places for independent studying or group projects.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Folkloristics and Applied Heritage Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

When I heard how fantastic the professors were and how available they make themselves to the students, I was persuaded. Not only does the university have a solid reputation, but the professors in my programme are deeply hooked into the international folkloristic ecosystem and their ties with UNESCO was another huge asset.  I wanted a tight-knit programme, and I feel like I found it at the University of Tartu.

Why Estonia?

I was looking for something outside of the US, and while this programme was the initial reason for my applying to the University of Tartu, the more I researched about Estonia the more it felt like it was the perfect place for me. There was a lot that reminded me of my home in Minnesota, and also a lot that was going to be brand new for me.  Plus, the language is drop-dead GORGEOUS, right-on par with the beauty of the landscape. My uncle said it looked like I’d be studying in a fairy tale, which seems appropriate for a folklorist, I suppose. ;)

PROGRAMME: Master's in Folkloristics and Applied Heritage Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

Cultural heritage and history have always fascinated me, but my focus was mainly on the tangible side of it. I have always witnessed how traditions can disappear, and this persuaded me to study Folkloristic and Applied Heritage Studies. I applied to the University of Tartu, where I knew that I would be adequately educated with higher educational standards and in an international environment. So far, it is even beyond my expectations. I think it is safe to say that your professors care about you more than you do! They do whatever they can to help their students, and they make sure that you can foster your abilities in a very friendly and academic area.

This specific programme is affiliated with the UNESCO Chair on Applied Studies of Intangible Cultural Heritage makes the University of Tartu stand out considerably. I believe UT deserves to be one of the few universities globally to have a UNESCO chair.

Why Estonia?

I wanted to experience something new, so I looked into places that were unfamiliar to me. I found Estonia just like a miracle, and the rest of the process happened to be very fast. e-Estonia is heaven for startups companies, and almost everything is online. The quality of life here in Estonia is very high, and this Baltic country is one of the most developed ones. Estonia is a combination of old and new, modernity and tradition. Coming from a megacity called Tehran, Tartu, for me, is like breathing fresh air. Tartu is peaceful, alive, and above all, it is safe.

PROGRAMME: Bachelor's in Science and Technology

Why did you choose to study this programme?

Since high school, I knew it was the right choice for me to study science, but I could not put my finger on any specifics and wanted a diverse programme. The programme’s structure is designed uniquely, it is the main reason I chose Science and Technology. It allows you to find what interests you the most from different fields of natural and exact sciences and continue down that path.

Why Estonia?

The short answer is that life is full of coincidences.

Because of various videos showing how great life is here, technological advances, freedom, e-government, the beautiful nature and so many more things that make Estonia so amazing, I became interested in this wonderful country. I planned and researched for months and had a structured plan to present to my family, then something surprising happened, my father got married to an Estonian woman. This made the process of moving to a new country a whole less scary. Now that I am here, it is even more beautiful than the pictures. It was definitely the right choice.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Materials Science and Technology

Why did you choose to study this programme?

My study major at the university in Belarus was chemistry, and I could have started working with the knowledge I have received. Still, I understood that a bachelor’s level is not enough for me. So, I have started searching for different opportunities to continue my education. Fortunately, I found the programme at the University of Tartu, which included not only chemical, but also technological and engineering aspects. The programme’s description caught my eye, the possibility to choose a lab for my master thesis sounded amazing, and I have decided to give this programme a go, and I applied. And here I am – open for new experiences, friends, and prospects.

Why Estonia?

The same question arose during the interview to my programme. It should be mentioned that I wanted to do my master’s somewhere abroad because other education systems and attitudes towards education usually help improve hard and soft skills. My choice of country was based on the programme: not every country has a fascinating science-oriented one. Estonia, and especially the University of Tartu, provides such an opportunity. Moreover, Estonia is pretty close to my Motherland, so I reckoned it would not take me too much time to get used to a new environment, people, and life pace. Also, Estonia is a digitally well-developed, safe, and peaceful (but cold) country with awesome and breathtaking nature and is very friendly to new international students.

PROGRAMME: Bachelor's in Science and Technology

Why did you choose to study this programme?

This programme provides a broad overview of natural and exact sciences and technologies. In the first year, we study subjects that provide good basic knowledge. Later, it is possible to choose a suitable field of specialisation, based on the acquired knowledge about different fields. I study Genetics and Biotechnology. I grew up in a medical dynasty. I knew I would have a profession related to medicine as soon as I developed self-awareness. The urge to help people was in my blood. By the time I graduated from high school, I had begun to get more and more interested in genetics. This was influenced by the fact that I have a family history of thalassemia. Thalassemia could be cured by introducing or correcting a gene into the hematopoietic compartment or a single stem cell. The more I read about it, the more involved I became in it. I was fascinated by what actually causes disease and whether you can prevent people from developing particular conditions. The “Science & Technology” programme fits in perfectly with my career aims!

Why Estonia?

At first, I knew almost nothing about Estonia. My teacher and uncle recommended to me to apply to the University of Tartu. I started learning more and more about Estonia. There was plenty of information online about this wonderful country. Estonia is a very beautiful, safe, and well-regarded destination in the higher education sector. It has a highly digitalised community, which makes a living and studying here really comfortable. I knew it would be a place where I would be challenged academically, both inside and outside the lecture hall. We are taught by people who are currently carrying out research on the topics we’re learning about, so they really give us the most up-to-date knowledge in that area. We may even get the chance to contribute to this research during our time at university! I am where I need to be. I certainly made the right decision.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Innovation and Technology Management

Why did you choose to study this programme?

ITM is a programme that combines technology and management knowledge. Nowadays, our life cannot live without technology. The job market has a very high demand for people who have a technical knowledge background; even in the management and business field, that knowledge would be a definite advantage for a career. I was looking for a programme to help me with career path change. ITM came across, and I found that it is an excellent opportunity to learn something new and more relevant to our daily needs.

Why Estonia?

Estonia is a fast-growing country in Europe. There are a lot of opportunities behind this beautiful small country. Also, nature life is impressive and attractive. I was always wanting to experience life in Europe, and Estonia is one of the good options. Compared with some other universities in Europe, the University of Tartu won’t charge additional fees from international students. For example, if an Estonian student wants to take a programme taught in English, they also need to pay the tuition fee the same as an international student. That makes me feel been treated equally.

PROGRAMME: Bachelor's in Science and Technology

Why did you choose to study this programme?

It may sound like a cliché, but I have wanted to work in the field of science for as long as I’ve known. However, I couldn’t point out a domain in particular. Science and Technology caught my attention instantly because of how distinctive it is! The programme is designed to give you adequate knowledge about many different fields of Natural Sciences. It is not focused only on a distinct area of science but instead on a combination of many diverse branches, and that’s what makes it exceptional! So, I thought it would be an excellent chance for me to figure out where my passion lies!

Why Estonia?

I can’t say I fell in love with Estonia at first sight because that wasn’t the case for me. But the more I explored it, the more I started to admire it. I can count many reasons why I like Estonia, including its beautiful nature and so on, but what made it stand out for me was how calming and homely it feels, and that’s precisely the kind of environment I wanted to live in.

Additionally, Estonia is quite different from my home country in terms of climate and culture, so it was also an adventure for me. Was I intimidated at first? Yes, absolutely! I had no idea what to expect, but it was a challenge that I decided to accept, and I haven’t looked back ever since.

PROGRAMME: Bachelor's in Business Administration

Why did you choose to study this programme?

Since the final years of high school, I started to see that a strong foundation of entrepreneurial and marketing skills and an understanding of business environments are rapidly gaining more significance in a modern, fast-paced world landscape. Therefore, my burning desire to study Business Administration program was kindled through the valuable opportunities it gives a student to acquire a detailed knowledge of business disciplines. Business Administration programme focuses on all major functional areas of business and integrates practical learning as a part of the studies but simultaneously leads to many possibilities and career paths for future professional growth. Having considered the curriculum of Business Administration programme and an impeccable reputation of the University of Tartu, I was strongly convinced that my ambition to thrive intellectually will be even more fulfilled and encouraged during the next several years of studying this programme.

Why Estonia?

Estonia drew my attention as an attractive study destination due to its flexibility and dynamic economic growth. I am fascinated by how Estonia preserves its enriched culture and natural heritage and at the same time enhances its position in the world arena as a leader in innovative technologies and digitalization. Furthermore, I admire that the country is Europe’s start-up hot-spot and is home to many globally successful businesses. Particularly, the city of Tartu appeals to me by being one of the prominent intellectual capitals in Europe, where students can fulfill their potential and bring their ideas to life.

PROGRAMME: Master's in International Relations and Regional Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

My interest in international relations and regional studies began by studying the Baltic Sea region during my Bachelor’s studies in Russia. Throughout my studies, I focused on exploring the Baltic Sea region and mutually beneficial relationships for the socio-economic and political development of the countries located in this region. The programme’s curriculum at the University of Tartu is closely correlated with the courses and disciplines that I studied earlier. For this reason, I am looking forward to deepening and expanding the already acquired knowledge and applying it to real research projects. In my further research path, I want to focus on analyzing the increasing environmental pressure at the Baltic Sea and how to tackle the problem with the help of international cooperation. Obtaining the master’s degree at the University of Tartu will bring me one step closer to my Ph.D. degree in Social Science and the future career of a university professor.

Why Estonia?

My interest in Estonia began with a trip to Tallinn as part of the Tallinn Summer School in 2014. This programme involved study tours to universities, including the University of Tartu, communication with professors and students. I liked the atmosphere that prevailed at the University of Tartu: encouraging student initiative and diverse scientific interests, easy interaction between students and professors, rich experience of international cooperation with other research centers. After that trip, my heart got lost among the lovely streets of Tartu, and I had to come back here to pick it up.

PROGRAMME: Master's in International Relations and Regional Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I’ve always had a passion for traveling the world and discovering the unknown! So, it surprised no one that I would aspire to study how the world communicates with each other! International Relations allows me to understand how various states collaborate to make a better social world for everyone. The amazing aspect of the IRRS program at the University of Tartu is the ability to specialize in a specific region, which is one of the many reasons I chose this programme! Studying International Relations truly requires its students to use politics, sociology, anthropology, and psychology to fully explore this unique relationship between states, and the University of Tartu takes a strong interdisciplinary approach to this unique and contemporary field!

Why Estonia?

Initially, I was eager to go anywhere in Europe! The more I explored various programs around Western Europe, the more I desired something new and exciting. Luckily, my intense googling brought me to the University of Tartu, and evidently Estonia. The more I read about life in Estonian, the more my interest grew. The many accomplishments of the country’s many start-up businesses, approach to digital governance, and ability to maintain environmental integrity fascinated me. More so, the plethora of videos and pictures of Tartu that I poured over made me strongly “Fernweh”. I was beyond committed to starting a new chapter of my life in an amazing town, and with the opportunity of a lifetime to study a subject, I’m so passionate about!

PROGRAMME: Master's in Wellness and Spa Service Design and Management

Why did you choose to study this programme?

They say that versatility is power, just as passion supersedes all. Why have a surface knowledge of a system when you can also understand its operating principle? Hence my decision to have a master’s degree in Wellness and Spa Service Design and Management. This programme equips me with the required knowledge and skills to pursue a career as a specialist.

During my undergraduate studies (BSc in Physics), my enthusiasm and passion for health, wellness, and sustainability intensified. I learned the applicable concept of how fundamental energy can affect and improve human health. Narrowing it down to the area I am most passionate about; it also encompasses how electrons and properly utilized electromotive energy can improve the human immune system and nutritional quest. I was awe-struck by how the wellness of the human body could be affected even to the subatomic level. This was particularly impactful to me to gain a proper wellness routine, enhancing my understanding of targeted exercises.

As a result, I have foreseen a time when expertise in human sciences could influence wellbeing not only to medications but also to wellness management. Hence, I have that deep yearning to assist others in living a better life and supporting the growing sustainability trend. In other words, I aim to effectively integrate my degree as a physicist into wellness spa in general. And my programme is providing me with all the knowledge and experience needed to start.

Why Estonia?

I chose Estonia not only because I would acquire knowledge from different top-ranked experts and professionals but also because it is a country that values innovation and forward-thinking ideas. There is an atmosphere that creates a perfect experience and background. Tech-savvy, peaceful, affordable cost of living. A country where one input is valued and out of box ideas are cherished.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in Materials Science and Technology

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I come from a Chemical Engineering background, but ever since high school, I was fascinated by physics even to a larger degree than chemistry (one could argue, in fact, that chemistry is nothing more than a natural extension of physics). But for some reason, I was never brave enough to actually commit to physics on a degree level. After finishing my Bachelor’s in ChemEng, I decided that the time was right to challenge myself with something else – and Materials Science came through as an ideal option blending chemistry with physics, thus reuniting my two loves once again. The programme in the University of Tartu especially seemed like a great choice, since it does its best not to close any doors and keeps up the often-overlooked lifeline between academic research and entrepreneurship.

Why Estonia?

I might come out as a bit crazy here, but it was more or less a combination of chance, fate, and me being an idiot. Let me explain. Last summer, I was doing an internship where my uniform consisted of blue, black, and white so when prompted by a colleague with the age-old question “so what’s next” I looked into my heart (literally) and could only see – well, blue, black, and white. So, being quite familiar with the flags of the world, I decided to look up Estonia as a prospective destination for my graduate studies. And lo and behold, I fell in love immediately, both with the programme and with the rich tapestry consisting of wonderful nature, peculiar history, and just enough off-beatness that made Estonia and Tartu my primary choice. Me being a winter child helped just that one tiny bit to make the decision natural and fill it with expectation. As luck would have it, I got accepted and so here I am – being a much happier idiot, in a country much more colourful than the simplicity of blue, black, and white.

PROGRAMME: Master's in International Relations & Regional Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I did my Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, and decided that I want to develop further in the field of international politics. By the time I had to choose which programmes to apply to, I have heard a lot about the University of Tartu. By “hearing a lot” I mean that at least 5 people that I know have decided to do their Master’s degree here, at Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies. It includes 3 Master’s programmes, and each of them is unique in its own way. I was lucky enough to be accepted to both programmes I applied at this department, so it was a tough choice! In the end, I chose International Relations and Regional Studies for the ability to choose study track and for its attention-grabbing courses. The track focusing on the post-Soviet space and Russia was the most interesting to me. I did not want to study Russian politics in Russia, to get an outsider perspective from professors as well as from other students. And so far, it has been very engaging and thought-provoking. So I would definitely advise this programme to anyone interested in Russian and post-Soviet politics.

The courses and study tracks are not the only things to love this programme for. Since the department is quite small you feel personal attention from professors and faculty staff. They are always helpful to you in your academic questions, and sincerely want you to grow professionally. It also is the main programme in International Relations in Estonia, and I think it is very important for your future career development in this field. For example, Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs proposes topics for our thesis, how cool is that?

Why Estonia?

Estonia was the perfect option for me, because it is close to home (I’m originally from Saint-Petersburg) and at the same time it represents a totally different culture and lifestyle. I like that it is small enough for you to feel meaningfully contributing to society, which you do not usually get in big city and in huge universities. It is also big enough to have everything that you need in terms of shopping, cafes and other perks of city life. Estonians embrace a slow way of life, which at first seemed strange to me. When you get used to it, you start to enjoy the lack of hustle and thoughtful employees in offices, that always make sure that you understand everything and do not have any more questions and not get annoyed when you do. In Estonia, you have beautiful nature landscapes, and at the same time developed E-government. There are lots of young tech startups, alongside developed traditional handcraft and carefully kept heritage. As you could notice from my story so far, for me Estonia is a country of good balance of everything, and I think it is what makes it beautiful.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Actuarial and Financial Engineering

Why did you choose to study this programme?

While I looked at several programmes before applying, I ultimately chose Actuarial and Financial Engineering because of my interest in financial instruments and mathematics. The programme’s flexibility is impressive; after getting a broad exposure to what the programme offers, the elective classes will allow me to continue exploring my interests. Additionally, the variety of fields in which I can work after graduation is incredible. These factors combined led me to choose Actuarial and Financial Engineering at the University of Tartu.

Why Estonia?

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree, I wished that I had studied abroad. As a result, I decided to do my entire master’s degree abroad; when I searched for top universities with degrees taught in English, the University of Tartu was highly ranked and recommended. After many weeks of research, I decided that Estonia was the best place to continue my education. Two reasons Estonia stood out were the accessibility of information and the high ranking of its programmes.

Estonia’s high digitalisation level made it incredibly simple to find all the information I needed. I could be and feel well informed, despite never having traveled outside of North America before. The University of Tartu is ranked highly in the world. Since I found the university a few years before I was able to apply, I watched it rise every year in the world rankings. This rise showed me that the university is continually working to improve its academic programmes and student services.

PROGRAMME: Master's in International Relations and Regional Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I had previously studied Political Science, International Studies with a specialization in Russian, and Economics for my Bachelor Studies eons ago. Therefore, the obvious choice was to focus on International Relations with a focus in Regional Russian studies. Truthfully, I was thinking of furthering my economics studies but decided on International Relations because the job prospects are so much better. Just kidding. It was just out of pure interest. As for why the University of Tartu, instead of another university, it was because I had good friends living in both Tallinn and Riga, and it made sense to settle about halfway between the two.

Why Estonia?

At the beginning of the year, I had been looking for opportunities to live in Europe and thought that studying and expanding my academic horizons would be a good option for doing so. I had already been to Estonia twice before in my life and had even volunteered in Haapsalu with some friends I had met in New Zealand. Having already had some contacts in the country as well as a good friend in Riga, I decided that Estonia and Tartu, in general, would be a great choice. On top of that, since 50% of the country is forest and I enjoy hiking, it made sense to come here.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Computer Science

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I am from a Computer Science background, as I did my Bachelor’s in Computer Science Engineering at a reputable university in India. I then took a break from the industry to try out agriculture. This pursuit took me to Israel as well. Unfortunately, that adventure did not work for me, and I wanted to return to Computer Science. I am quite fond of the theoretical aspects of Computer Science and I love to understand the “Why?” of every field. My programme gives me the perfect opportunity to do that. So picking this programme was an extremely easy decision for me.

Why Estonia?

There are multiple reasons that led me to pick Estonia. The first and foremost is that I identify a lot with the cultural aspects of this tiny country. Estonians are known to be hardworking, blunt, and are not big fans of small talk. I believe in these values from my core. In fact, I have a little side project called Skip the Small Talk. If you are interested, you can find the code on my GitHub. The second reason is that it was important for me to be in Europe. Among the options I had I was drawn to Estonia because of its commitment to everything tech. The government and the people in general understand how technology can make their lives better, but at the same time they appreciate nature and things where tech should not be that important. This is again something I relate to a lot. So picking Estonia was also an extremely easy decision for me.

PROGRAMME: Bachelor’s in Business Administration

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I have been interested in market system and economics since I was a high school student and consistently wanted to deepen my knowledge in the field of business and finance. The most attractive point of this study is that I can apply what I learned in the course into the reality. In this term, I can say it is a practical field. The programme offers a myriad of options for student’s careers that helps them decide and build their own future. Moreover, its international environment is useful as there are subjects about international cultures and environments. Students can directly listen to vivid stories from diverse countries. These are my primary reasons of choosing this programme.

Why Estonia?

I felt Estonia is well-structured in general compared to other countries. It is well-known for its IT so even when I started to write an application, it was easy and simple to follow procedures and every step was clear. As I have a little background in the country and it is tough when the system is complicated but it was a pleasant experience in that respect. In addition, Estonia provides high quality of study with affordable price. Its tuition fee and living costs are relatively low and stable. Lastly, my favorite feature in Tartu is nature. It is beautifully balanced with infrastructure and nature.

PROGRAMME: Bachelor's in Business Administration

Why did you choose to study this programme?

For me, Business Administration has always been a field that requires entrepreneurial hunch, creativity, and innovative thinking. The idea of being your own boss and giving something new to the World – be it by social businesses or just something that makes others’ lives easier – motivated me to choose this field. Moreover, this programme was something out of my comfort zone that could motivate me to develop and look at the world in a different way. I did not only choose a programme; I chose an experience that could drive me to become a better version of myself.

Why Estonia?

Estonia is one of the secret treasures of Europe where one can find a small student-friendly city of Tartu. I chose it because it gives an opportunity to get a quality education, attend a variety of student clubs, work while studying, travel around Europe, and get to see one of the best sunsets. It seemed like a perfect fit for a girl to fulfill her potential: a secret, cozy and challenging city that wants her to prosper. Each time I did research on Estonia and the University of Tartu, I fell in love with it more and more. I pictured myself walking on the cobblestone streets with a rich history and beautiful architecture, drinking coffee on my way to class, and having memorable student years with sleepless nights. I wanted to be a part of a warm international community of Business students in the cold-weathered Estonia. The place attracted me so much, and I am glad it did. I really enjoy the feeling of studying in the old town of Tartu.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in Materials Science and Technology

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I studied Chemistry in my Bachelor’s, however, I did not want my options to be limited to that field alone, so I applied for Materials Science and Technology which incorporates the more applied side of chemistry as well as physics, to widen the scope of my future career opportunities. An additional bonus was the high ranking of the University of Tartu in the world’s university rankings, guaranteeing top-quality studies and a competitive degree that opens possibilities all around the world. It has proven to be everything I expected, and even more – I got to develop my entrepreneurial side as well!

Why Estonia?

After spending an Erasmus semester here and having seen how beautiful Estonian nature, Tartu and its people are, I had no doubt that I wanted to return to Estonia for my master’s degree. I love the cold weather, I admire the grounded, calm, but productive people, and I adore the language that doesn’t cease to make me laugh, being so similar yet different to Latvian. Estonia has definitely earned a special place in my heart over the years. Besides the excellent education opportunity, everything else (the cold weather, the familiar mentality of the people, and the wild nature) makes me feel like I am home, away from home.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in Computer Science

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I did my Bachelor’s in Computer Science and after graduation, I decided that I want to deepen my knowledge in this field more. As CS is quite a broad field, it was important to me that the programme offers the possibility to choose a specialization (I wanted to do Data Science!). But at the same time, I still wanted to get some general knowledge. The other thing that played a role in my decision was the practical orientation of the programme. When I found the University of Tartu, I realized that this programme is the perfect match. It allows choosing the specialization as well as it offers many different “practical” possibilities for IT students.

Why Estonia?

First of all, Estonia is a rapidly developing country in the IT field. There are a lot of opportunities for IT specialists – startups, hackathons, internships. Secondly, I learned about the University of Tartu from my friend, who highly recommended not only the university but Tartu itself.  And of course, Estonia is an extremely friendly and welcoming country towards international students. Now I am absolutely sure that I made the right choice!

PROGRAMME: Master’s in International Relations & Regional Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I was drawn to International Relations for its focus on the dynamic interplay between various actors in world politics, such as states, NGOs and individuals. The list may go on, because these relations are complex, and so interesting to me. My ambition is to work with human rights issues in Europe, for which the IRRS programme fits perfect. Not only does IRRS provide a thorough, deep dive into the theories and many research fields of IR, it also helps me explore different research methods and practical approaches to one of three specialisation regions (the EU/Russia and Eurasia/the Baltic Sea region). Lastly, I appreciate the flexibility of the curriculum – I can take on all my core courses, while also picking from a wide variety of electives – perfect for each student’s specific interests.

Why Estonia?

I opted for Estonia because I want to be in an environment with high research output and be close to nature for my spare time. Estonia offers the perfect combination of this! Being from the North, I know how beautiful the changes in seasons are, so having hiking trails nearby, lakes almost around the corner and forest everywhere (yes, everywhere) around you is a dream! Moreover, a lot of things are a click away (thank you, e-Estonia!). With that said, Estonia, and Tartu, will never fall short of new things to explore- It might feel difficult, at times overwhelming to move to a new country, but I have been greeted with so many smiles in Tartu and really feel part of an international community. To wrap up, Estonia just felt right when I submitted my application, and I have not looked back since.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in Folkloristics and Applied Heritage Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I chose to study this programme because I wished to break the monotonous life that a history major lives in India. Folkloristics gives me a chance to venture out and explore my options and limitations and gives me amazing insight into a field that has very surprising ties with history on a root level. Plus the chance to travel Europe and learn new aspects of an unknown field, how can anybody resist that?

Why Estonia?

There are not many universities in the world that offer Folkloristics in their Master’s programme, but for me I wanted to explore a place that many had not heard about. After finding the programme, I became intrigued with the country and as I dug deeper, I found an amazing history and lore of such a small yet diverse country, so it was a no-brainer for me to hop on a plane and fly to this unknown country.

PROGRAMME: Bachelor’s in Business Administration

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I first realized that I had a sense for business when I was trading football cards in the schoolyard with my classmates, towards the end of secondary school. Due to this early curiosity, I chose to continue my education at a business high school. In these three years, I was introduced to the basic concepts of business administration for the first time. Furthermore, I developed a special interest in the field of entrepreneurship. While I am continuously working on my personal development with a strong focus on my soft skills, I recognize the importance of learning at one of the world’s best universities in the area of business and economics. I expected the Business Administration programme to provide me with an excellent theoretical knowledge base for the career I wish to have. Furthermore, I see it as an ideal platform to build the foundational pieces of my network with a selected group of ambitious and like-minded people.

Why Estonia?

It exists. Love at first sight – or better: emotional well-being from day one. That pretty much describes the feeling I had when I first came to Estonia in January 2019. In this case only for a short time for the sTARTUp days festival, but enough to be captivated by Tartu and the capital Tallinn. I had already read a lot about the start-up scene as well as the digital infrastructure and the extremely well-preserved nature of the country. The one-week stay was convincing enough for me to apply for an academic year abroad at the University of Tartu, which I successfully completed over the last two semesters. My valuable experiences during this time have anchored my emotional well-being of day one more firmly in me. Both my social and academic environment in Tartu, the short distances, not only geographically but also between the citizens of the city, and ultimately the overall atmosphere of Tartu, created by magic accents like the river Emajõgi, which flows through the heart of Tartu, have given me more than one reason to stay.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in Information Technology Law

Why did you choose to study this programme?

As a lawyer in Ecuador, I noticed that many issues inside the government and amongst its people could be solved using technology and digital means. I chose to study the MA IT Law programme because with the knowledge and skills acquired during my studies, I expect to work in my country and participate in the creation of laws and policies to improve the security of the national databases regarding personal data of all citizens. This will allow the creation of additional regulations regarding the construction of a more technologically inclined nation in important areas that our country needs to develop, and eventually, the establishment of a successful e-government like the Estonian.

Why Estonia?

Since I became interested in information technology and law, I started watching videos and reading articles on the topic. After some of them, I noticed that Estonia kept being mentioned as an example of good practices and innovation, so I decided to do some research, and found University of Tartu! I decided to apply because it has a good reputation of high-quality education. Being here now, I know that Estonia in general is a very well organised country, it has beautiful landscapes, and the living is affordable. Estonia is the hidden gem of Europe.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in International Relations & Regional Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

During my Bachelor’s in European Studies I noticed that my interests are very broad and even go beyond Europe. I am very interested in International Relations and particularly in the post-soviet space as a region. This Master’s programme offered by the University of Tartu combines international cooperation, politics, conflict management, foreign policy, and more. It has multiple specialisations and the one in Russian and Eurasian Studies is exactly what I was looking for. Besides the courses on IR related issues and on research skills, it gives you the opportunity to go abroad in the second year, which I really like. I very much appreciate the freedom that this programme offers, such as the possibility to go on exchange, choosing a specialisation and following as many electives as you like. Another great thing is that the university also offers many language courses which you can follow on the side. Before coming here, I heard good stories about the University of Tartu, also from other people who studied in the Netherlands before, which is what really convinced me to apply for the programme.

Why Estonia?

I like very much living in Estonia. I have lived in Tallinn before, so no culture shock for me. The country is very unique, it feels European yet foreign to me at the same time. Besides the Estonians themselves being quite special, the international people who come to Estonia are different than most: they are not the kind of people who are looking for sun, beaches, cheap partying or easy lifestyle. Most people who come here are either very motivated to participate in a specific programme offered by the University of Tartu, or they are interested in Estonia as a country; or both. The way Estonia developed, especially considering its history, makes it such a special country: Estonia is way more innovative and modern than most people assume. Its geographical location does not only make the country very interesting, being on the border of Europe, but also very practical to travel around (going to Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Finland, Sweden). The country is small, though bigger than my home country, but has beautiful nature and many nice places to visit. At the same time, the cities look stunningly medieval and fairy-tale-like, especially Tartu and Tallinn. Tartu is not a big city, but not small enough to get bored. It really feels like a student city, most people on the street are young and after a week you will know half of them. Learning about the country and getting to know some Estonians (which takes some time) will definitely improve your time in Estonia. If you want to live in a big city with great weather, social locals and an easy-going lifestyle, this is not the place. Yet if you want to live in a cosy city in a unique and interesting country, study at a great university with students from all over the world and share this experience with like-minded people, Tartu is the place for you.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in Software Engineering

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I am interested in the practical side of Software in making applications that many people can use and how these software can be used to empower businesses. This programme teaches the technique expertise to build scalable applications and the business sense to manage them. The programme offers a unique opportunity to participate in the Industrial Master’s Programme, which is an internship over 1.5 years to apply the skills I have learned in class to a company. I was accepted to work for Pipedrive as a part of this programme.

Why Estonia?

Estonia is known as the Silicon Valley of Europe and has many technology companies located here. Combined with their e-governance systems, I wanted to experience a country that values technology in all parts of the country. The longer I live here, the more I value all the technological improvements they have. Estonia is a country of beautiful nature in a cold climate. Coming from a warm temperate climate in America, seeing the seasons change and the days shorten and lengthen has been exciting. Each season is unique and beautiful in its own way and you never get tired of the scenery as it is always changing around you. Hiking through the forests, there is always something magical to find; whether berries, animals, bugs, or mushrooms, it is a really serene place to go visit to let off stress from studying.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Innovation and Technology management

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I did my first degree in Computer Science but throughout the studies, I discovered that I am engrossed in applying data science for real-life problems. Specifically, I am keen on Natural Language Processing (do not mix up with Neuro-Linguistic programming – they have nothing in common!). I simply followed my heart and decided to enhance my entrepreneurship capabilities and advance my hard skills. The Innovation and Technology management programme was a perfect fit as it focuses on both tech and business part within. Exactly what I was looking for.

Why Estonia?

That is an adventures story! In 2016 I was volunteering at Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal. At venues, I met StartupEstonia stand. I think I have spent there about 2-3 hours talking about Estonians. I fell in love with how the country promotes itself as a startup land with outstanding e-government. and take steps to stay competitive in the future.

In a year, I am very thankful to me from the past for clicking the “Submit” button on the 15th of March. The start-up environment is only a little piece of a tasty pie of what you can discover in Estonia! Nature, traditions, cultural life. Can you imagine the open-air orchestra concert for everyone?

PROGRAMMEMaster’s in Innovation and Technology Management

Why did you choose to study this programme?

Even though I did my bachelor in Economics and Public Finance, I was always interested in coding, innovations, and data science. When I search about the department, I found out that apart from teaching theories, practical sessions play also an important role, and that is what I was looking for exactly. As a deputy head of Khan Academy Azerbaijan, I needed to get the knowledge to manage the e-education platform and ITM is quite appropriate one from this perspective.

Why Estonia?

While applying to different universities for master’s, I wanted to choose the country that offers various opportunities. Hereby, Estonia is the best one for me because of the ecosystem that helps to build up your own start-up easily, conditions for self-improvement and learning with the cutting-edge implementations. Furthermore, nature which you live in is quite important and since Tartu is full of trees, you never feel like depressive. Then, Estonia is a heaven for people like me, who are fond of cold weather (Chionophile).

PROGRAMME: Master’s in Innovation and Technology Management

Why did you choose to study this programme?

The story of my passion for innovation and technologies dates back to my freshman year of university, when I started my first internship as a project manager in an IT company. Since then, I started to work in the field while pursuing a computer engineering degree. However, my work in software development companies was not as a developer, but a manager. After three years of real experience, I felt that I lacked theoretical knowledge and decided to search for a master programme.

The Innovation and Technology programme was love at first sight. The scope and subjects seemed to be very interesting and about something I did for years but never studied. Thus, I applied, and got accepted.

Why Estonia?

My choice was not based on the country but by the programme I wanted to study. Hence, Estonia became part of my life and is my second love after the programme I study.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Robotics and Computer Engineering

Why did you choose to study this programme?

As a space enthusiast, what could be better than being a student in one of the top Universities in the Baltics; pursuing a Master’s Degree in Robotics and Space Technology? This incredible opportunity, combined with the continuing practical experience gained from building the Student Satellite, EstCube-2, which precedes the already acclaimed EstCube-1, exemplifies how extensively the University of Tartu provides the perfect blend of theoretical and practical experience for my Master’s curriculum to be truly exceptional. The socio-academic environment has been stellar and has certainly helped foster positivity and radiate a sense of development through the abundant windows of opportunities present within Tartu, the “City of Good Thoughts”.

Why Estonia?

Estonia, built on the proud heritage handed down from centuries of nationalism and patriotism, stands strong as a country that offers its residents: the freedom of thought, expression, individualism, and internet as a Human Right. On the path towards developing as an E-Country, Estonia renders all the privileges which nurture an individual to an environment filled with the sublime aura of natural beauty with technical advancements.

The City of Tartu warmly welcomed me with the embrace of summer, the beauty of autumn and the snowy winters. The Student Capital of Estonia hosts academic aspirants from all over the world to indulge in a varied curriculum of different disciplines. This gesture alone brings about the combination of extensive cultural and social experiences, which coalesces into a marvelous example of a truly modern and progressive educational ideology supporting the continued development of academic attainment for the betterment of humanity.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Contemporary Asian & Middle Eastern Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I have always considered Asia and the Middle East to be the lands of diversity and mystery, with enriching cultures, intricate history and extraordinary outlooks on life. I believe that studying these elements becomes essential in order to understand business strategies, economic developments, political decisions, military tensions and social crises in these areas. Furthermore, I feel that much of the tensions that arise between and within Asia and the rest of the world are a result of predefined negative bias, misunderstandings and stereotypes. Therefore, ever since I signed up for this programme, my deepest wish has been to cut through the stereotypes and develop an objective knowledge of Asia and the Middle East, so that I would be able to engage myself in social and humanitarian issues currently arising in those lands. After one year of studying in the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies programme, I have grown more tolerant, more understanding and gained a stronger desire to create a more positive impact in those around me.

Why Estonia?

I first arrived in Estonia as an Erasmus student in 2017 and initially did not know what to expect. However, as soon as I started studying here, I was amazed by the high quality of education offered at the University of Tartu. I was also impressed by how well the country was being run and how nice and open Estonians are. As far as I am concerned, Estonia is the country of my personal development; it is here where I have grown the most as a student and adult. Furthermore, for Romanians, Estonia is largely unknown, so being here motivated me to learn as much as possible about the country’s history, culture and lifestyle so that I can share my experiences with people back home. As for Tartu, it is the perfect student city. It feels familiar, homely, cozy and there are always interesting activities to do here. I feel so thankful to be part of such a warm and diverse community of students, many of whom I consider lifelong friends.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in Software Engineering

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I always had a keen interest in both technology and management. The Software Engineering programme is a mix of both. It gives me the opportunity to blend my technical as well as management skills. The practical experience in the form of internships, entrepreneurial projects and coursework is immense. I consider this programme to be a perfect launch-pad for me to learn more about new programming languages, paradigms and business.

Why Estonia?

I came across Estonia when I was reading an article of how electronic ID push in Estonia has created a more connected society and made public and private services more personalized and convenient, all while protecting individual privacy. This was when I started reading more about Estonia and got to know more about Estonian government initiatives. This is when I felt that I need to pursue my higher studies from a country where innovation runs deep in the blood. On a personal note, I always have a thing for calm and secluded countries. I feel that Estonia is a hidden gem in true sense; world leader in implementation of technology, quality of life, tranquility and preserved medieval architecture.

PROGRAMMEMaster’s in Innovation and Technology Management

Why did you choose to study this programme?

Having a complete idea about my future career since the very childhood, is definitely not what I can relate to. What I can say with certainty, though, is that I have always been fascinated by information and technology. Knowing this and possessing a bit of courage, I gained a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. After graduation, I have come to the conclusion that it has been quite enough of coding for me. At that point, I knew that I wanted to combine my passion for IT and management and that is how I found a perfect master’s. ITM offers everything you would like to know about the world of modern IT from a “softer” perspective and that is what I love the most.

Why Estonia?

During bachelor’s I was lucky enough to go on an exchange and do an internship abroad. These experiences made me realize that I want to do my master’s not back home but rather in some unexpected place. I have to be honest and say that despite originating from a country with a cold winter, I do not enjoy snow and subzero temperatures at all. Yet, I was so excited about Innovation and Technology Management programme that promised myself to deal with the weather. I should also say that the University of Tartu reputation and the feedback from close friends studying here helped me to decide. It seems like I have made quite a right choice.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in International Relations and Regional Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

University of Tartu’s degree in International Relations and Regional Studies (IRRS) offers a unique opportunity to engage with theoretical and practical aspects of policy in macro (international) and micro (regional) settings. The IRRS program endows peripheral knowledge of international systems and focused understanding of regional dynamics. But, beyond the advertising pamphlet rhetoric, I chose this program because I hope to develop my skills as an agent for positive, and progressive, social change. It’s cliche, hackneyed, silly…. whatever you want to call it… but I want to dedicate my career to empathetic policy making or, in less jargon “making the world a better place”.

Why Estonia?

Why not Estonia?! This beautiful little country is home to over 2,000 islands, gorgeous medieval old towns, some of the world’s best knitting patterns, amazing forests to explore, kohuke (google it… seriously), and so much more! Estonia is many things— small, quiet, cold…— but, it’s also magical. I mean, what would you expect from a place with the most meteorite craters per area? Estonia is also the home (well one of the three) to the Singing Revolution (the Baltic nations’ struggle for freedom against the Soviet Union, epitomized by the Baltic Way— a human chain stretching from Tallinn, Estonia to Vilnius, Lithuania)… which just so happens to be my research interest.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in Excellence in Analytical Chemistry

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, and have worked in the Process Control and Automation industry for more than 2 years. I chose the Excellence in Analytical Chemistry (EACH) programme among all the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree (EMJMD) programmes because it would fortify my knowledge in chemistry, which is the foundation of chemical engineering, and would also allow me to specialise in the Industrial Analysis and Process Control.

Why Estonia?

When applying for an EMJMD programme, you don’t have the control as to which country in Europe you are going to study because each programme’s participating universities were selected by the European Commission. But when I found out that I will be spending my first year in Estonia, I was really interested into knowing more about the culture and the cuisine. On top of that, I would really want to see the beauty of Estonia with my own eyes!

PROGRAMME: Master's in Software Engineering

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I wanted to pursue a master’s degree in Software Engineering because a project is much more than code. This program was the best opportunity for me to continue my education, as the Enterprise software program at Tartu university expertly combines theoretical and practical study into a unique educational experience. The advanced content not only covers the software procedures of large and complex enterprise projects, but also the data of the system, the business model, and the economic management aspects of developing software.

Why Estonia?

Estonia could be considered as the Silicon Valley of Europe, as it is home to an international community that has a great passion towards innovation and technology, in addition, it is ranked the first worldwide in terms of broadband Internet speeds and holds the record for start-ups per person. Moreover, due to the small population of Estonia, you can easily find yourself in touch with the best minds of the industry and their mind-blowing research ideas.

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I chose to study International Relations and Regional Studies because I always admired world politics, diplomacy and how people try to connect countries to each other. So I studied International Relations for my bachelor’s and have also chosen to pursue it at a higher academic level so I could more effectively master what I do and love.

Why Estonia?

I actually always had a thing for mysterious countries, the ones that are developed but underestimated or undervalued, and I love finding and discovering them while I get to enjoy the benefits for myself. Also while I was looking at programs in Europe I saw that the University of Tartu had a good program and I wanted to try how it was to study in Estonia.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in International Relations and Regional Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

My curiosity to understand more about the world and its political dynamics, in addition to my passion for a national law, and observing carefully the local politics of my region in Nigeria, motivated my pursuance of a BA in International Relations, and consequently my recourse towards an MA in International Relations and Regional Studies, with a great desire to revitalize the foreign relations and diplomacy between my country, and the rest of the world. It is the ideal programme for me to better understand the disparities and alignment between state practices (politics) and international law, as well as to learn more about international organizations.

Why Estonia?

Honestly, I did not have an expansive amount of knowledge about Estonia prior to becoming a student of UT. At the top of what I admired most about Estonia was its successful e-governance, its first female head of state and the fertile atmosphere for Start-ups. Consequently, I fell in love with the serenity, conduciveness and aesthetics that the city of Tartu in particular provides. The fact that I do not have to study amidst the rush-hour that characterizes most major cities of Europe, is a blessing to me. Overall, I am happy to be able to grow as a “global citizen” and enrich my multicultural knowledge; to feed my hunger to understand the world and its people. Nowadays many countries and visa regimes are quick to dismiss most Nigerians due to stereotypes, but I am grateful for Estonia, for the chance to prove myself as a simple individual in search for knowledge, in a foreign country, and nothing more.

Why Estonia?

An extremely renowned faculty, a milieu replete with academic activity and a meticulously designed course which ensures superior education are the factors which motivated me to choose the University of Tartu. In all frankness, I wanted to experience all aspects of an unfamiliar culture. Estonia is Europe’s startup hub, a bliss for tech-students like me. Higher education in Estonia can be pursued at a good value, with relatively low tuition fees, living costs and several scholarships for international students. It is also one of the safest places on the planet with untouched natural beauty and friendly people.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in Philosophy

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I knew I wanted to become a student at the University of Tartu since the very first time I visited the place seven years ago when I was still in high school. Five years later I was sure I wanted to continue my formal education in philosophy and after examining several university web pages and programmes I realized that my first choice, though based entirely on different reasons, had always been right. This programme has a very individual approach, which allows you to flexibly design your own plan of studies and grants you the opportunity to really follow your own research interests while at the same time offering an international department of professors covering a vast number of fields and areas of study. I could not be more satisfied and excited about my decision.

Why Estonia?

I first came to Estonia when I was eighteen years old. I was an exchange student with a profound passion for classical contemporary music, particularly, the music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. He was the only thing I knew about this mysterious country, but my love for his music was reason enough for me to embark on the most life-changing experience of my life. I lived just for a wonderful year in Tallinn, the capital, and then I went back to Mexico. I knew I had to return to this precious land which had already taught me so much. And I finally managed to do it after six years of longing. I arrived just at the right moment. The wait was worth. So much has changed since then, yet it still feels like home.

PROGRAMME: Master’s in EU-Russia Studies (the programme is no longer available, please check International Relations and Regional Studies instead)

Why did you choose to study this programme?

My Bachelor’s degree is in International Relations from the Tbilisi State University. After finishing my studies at the university, I wanted to continue my specialization on the EU-Russia bilateral relationship. The programme is interesting for me as I believe that it will provide me with specific and exact knowledge about the relations of, and between, these two powerful international actors. Knowing about both the EU policy and the policy of Russia is a huge advantage in the field of international relations, while the knowledge of EU-Russia relations is a privilege in my point of view. Aside from the chance of honing my skills in my field of study, I believe that this programme will help to enable me to stand on my own feet. This will help me and my personal development and will allow me to become more familiar with the world that I’m going to face as an adult.

Why Estonia?

To start with, I always wanted to study abroad, so after finishing my bachelor’s degree, I focused on checking desirable programmes in different universities in Europe. I chose Estonia mostly due to the University of Tartu’s pretty good reputation. In addition to this, I had basic information about the quality of education here from current-past students. Accordingly, I checked some programmes and their schedules. Fortunately, I have found a suitable and interesting course for me: EU-Russia Studies. That’s how I became a Master’s degree seeking student here!

PROGRAMME: Master’s in Democracy and Governance (currently Politics and Governance in the Digital Age)

Why did you choose to study this programme?

After I completed my bachelor, I got the opportunity to become an intern at an NGO which got me interested in learning more about how civil society, the third sector and the state work together. By being part of the Democracy and Governance programme, I could explore the relationship between governments, civil society and the private sector in democratic as well as non-democratic countries. The study programme offers a great overview of how policymaking and governing in general works and how it has changed over years. I was further interested in joining this MA programme as it allows me to choose electives from a great pool of fascinating classes which means that I can create my own study profile.

Why Estonia?

I first came to Estonia three years ago as an Erasmus student because I had never really been to a “cold” country before. While the weather was definitely an adjustment for me, I fell in love with Tartu. I really like that I can be in the city centre and can meet friends in no time while also getting to the countryside for a hike just as easily. Estonia’s nature is super rich, every season will give something new and special, it is so much fun to explore the country. Also, the atmosphere at the university was really welcoming and helpful. So, I just had to return!

PROGRAMME: Master's in Innovation and Technology Management

Why did you choose to study this programme?

The programme of Business Administration gives a broad overview on how to run a business. But, not only. It is important nowadays to be flexible and know something on various matters. Such topics as international cooperation between countries and their interdependencies help widen my horizons. The university itself, the programme, and various student organizations also help me make the best of my time in Estonia.

Why Estonia?

Before coming to Tartu, I had been living all my life in the city of Saint-Petersburg, which is right next to the Baltics. As I have been visiting Baltic countries throughout my childhood, I’ve decided that it would be a great opportunity to get a bachelor’s degree here. Choosing the university, I considered the ranking as well as personal attachment toward the place. Estonia and, particularly, the University of Tartu is a great merge of both for me. Here I have met new people I would never even think of and have made valuable friends.

PROGRAMMEMaster's in Information Technology Law

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I was looking forward to continuing my education with a programme which complimented my working experience. My research helped me find the University of Tartu’s  IT Law Master’s programme, which was just what I was looking for. IT distinguishes itself combining both technical and practical skills, which will certainly give me a broad perspective of the application of the law. There is no doubt that technology is the future and it is important to adjust and modernise the legislation to these changes.

Why Estonia?

Once I found the master’s programme, I started to do a little research about Estonia and the city of Tartu. I immediately discovered that it was a multicultural city open to international students with one of the most prestigious universities in the Baltics. Estonia is also an international leader in the field of IT and digital society, a perfect example of technological development. I can say that this city has also captivated me from the first moment I arrived. It is quiet, full of nature, and you can always find beautiful landscapes and places reminiscent of fairy tales.

Why did you choose to study this programme?

This programme is what I was looking for. I believe, it makes me more knowledgeable in the field of social science, with the help of experienced professors combined with my strong motivation. The classes involve theoretical and practical modules, which gives a broad knowledge about the subject and teaches me useful skill.

Why Estonia?

Estonia caught my attention first because of its rapid development story and current innovational initiatives, especially in the field of e-voting, which is going to be my thesis topic. In addition to this, the system of education and the teaching methods my professors use are quite effective, which is more than enough for an international student to come here.

PROGRAMMEBachelor's in Business Administration

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I was always interested in fundamentally different educational fields, from biology to literature, and I couldn’t decide exactly, what I wanted to pursue.

I originally decided to try myself in journalism, then made the switch to studying genetics, and finally, I understood that I most wanted to find something that would integrate as many fields of study as possible.

I explored Business as the unique synergy of numerous theoretical and practical spheres of knowledge, which have significantly supported me as a specialist, and as an individual.

In the 21st century, when information is the most important thing to invest in, business people occupy a unique position as ones who combine numerous theoretical and practical forms of skills to thrive in an increasingly competitive global environment.

Why Estonia?

For me, Estonia is a perfect eclectic mixture of European and Russian cultures.

Life here is not completely different in terms of typical mentalities and provides a high level of comfort with a lot of opportunities to support growth and development for all the social categories, even for foreigners. As a result, I don`t feel lost in Estonian culture.

The main benefit to life in Estonia stems from who you are as a person. If you have ambitions and working potential, you definitely will find projects and events, which will be helpful to satisfy all of your educational and self-expressive desires.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Software Engineering

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I chose Software Engineering programme because it would give me the opportunity to develop and improve in a field which is a part of my professional goals. This faculty offers the greatest possibility of receiving complete training in programming as well as the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary and academically prestigious environment. Furthermore, I am able to improve my English language skills and ultimately have an extremely exciting, fun, and valuable experience in both my studies and my overall general development. Studying in this field allows me to gain the necessary knowledge and become a more professional software developer. Also, Software Engineering is a joint programme with Tallinn University of Technology and students can study both at University of Tartu and Tallinn University of Technology. It is a very flexible programme. Moreover, I feel like after studying here for one year I have been rapidly growing as a person, and I am certain that studying at this faculty gives me a big chance to one day become someone who is remembered for her innovations. I think it is our duty as people sharing life in this world to make the future better because it belongs to everybody.

Why Estonia?

Estonia is known as the home for internationally successful IT innovations such as Skype. So I thought of the best possible environment to involve myself with and why not, also create my own startup and realized that Estonian Universities would be an exceptionally good choice. Afterwards, I went to an info-session in Yerevan where Estonians introduced Tallinn University and the University of Tartu. I did some research and understood that studying at the University of Tartu would provide a good opportunity for me to pursue research fields of my interest and a way for me to realise my research ambitions. The high-quality education standards, extremely distinguished faculty members, and world-class research facilities were the factors which motivated me to choose this university for my studies. Not only does studying here give me a lot of knowledge, but it is also a genuinely pleasant experience, the lecturers and people in Estonia are very nice.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Information Technology Law

Why did you choose to study this programme?

New technologies and innovations have transformed the global landscape, leading to an unprecedented change in traditional markets, economic sectors and our perception of the world around us. All these modern changes also have had a tremendous impact on the legal sphere. There are many reasons why I chose to study in the Information Technology Law programme at the University of Tartu, but the main reasons are the quality and uniqueness of the study curriculum. Moreover, the IT Law programme provides a great opportunity to learn about some of the technologies transforming our world, such as online services and cybersecurity, from a legal perspective.

Why Estonia?

Living and studying in Estonia provides two major benefits. Firstly, Estonia has a great learning environment and a rapidly growing international community which create a great opportunity for personal and professional growth. Secondly, local unspoiled nature and rural countrysides help to transform you into a deep thinker.

It is a metaphor to demonstrate my desire to have personal growth through education abroad. I could get out of my comfort zone, think out of the box, and see how developed the dental field in the world is.

Why Estonia?

I visited Tartu, “kauneim linn Eestis”, last year for three months. That visit was immersed with joy, surprise, and satisfaction. I developed a sentimental attachment to my lovely Estonian friends, special love with this fresh and peaceful city, and enthusiasm to discover further about this place. Tartu is a dynamic city moving in a calm pace.

It is true that once you fall in love with Tartu, you will return. I decided to further my education at the University of Tartu, which is among the top 3% of the most prestigious universities in the world. I love to challenge myself at an internationally recognized university to keep my mind and my eyes wide open. More importantly, I have full financial support for my study and encouragement to undertake research in Vietnam from my supervisor. I am enthusiastic about witnessing and contributing to the transformation of the University of Tartu and research development in my own country.

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I have a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, so I hope this programme helps me deepen my knowledge and improve my skill in analytical chemistry in order to solve the global issue of counterfeit drugs, which affects Indonesia. Beside the undoubted quality, this program also offers a multi-cultural study experience: students have diverse backgrounds and come from different continents.

Why Estonia?

At first, I did not know what to expect about Estonia since I did not know much about this country. Surprisingly, everything turns out well: air quality, e-public service, convenient student life, beautiful places to travel to, good food. In my case, it is an unexpected love.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Wellness and Spa Service Design Management

Ambassador is temporarily inactive spending time studying abroad.

Why did you choose to study this programme?
When I finished my bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurship in 2010, my next goal was to proceed for a specialized master’s degree, if there’s any.  It just have to be closely related to my passion in healing, well-being and transformational change.

So, I was looking for it intermittently for a year in 2011. When I found the programme, I couldn’t believe that it exists! Because most of the related courses were so far either short-term skills training or management workshops. I wanted a wholistic perspective of the global spa and wellness industry.

Six years passed and I am finally here, ready to go back to school and ticked it off from the bucket list.

Why Estonia?

After I knew about the programme, I learned that my friend’s sister was taking her MA in Estonia then. So, I asked her about the country, culture, people and her impressions. There were positive insights.

It’s a plus for me that Estonia is small, less-crowded, tech-savvy, and still full of greenery. There’s a place here to explore new depths and possibilities in life and adventure.

PROGRAMME: Master's in European Languages and Cultures

Why did you choose to study this programme?

When I saw this programme on the University’s webpage marked as a new one, I just thought that it is a sign for me. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Spanish Language and the European Languages and Cultures programme was a perfect option to broaden my knowledge in this sphere. Moreover, the programme gives an opportunity to focus either on linguistics and translation or literature and culture. There is also a possibility to combine courses from both modules. Within this curriculum, all students can do an internship to apply the knowledge to the practice areas.

Why Estonia?

I have heard various opinions about Tartu from different people, and I just wanted to discover this city myself. After several weeks, I felt that I am slowly falling in love with Tartu. Nature is beautiful here, and the city looks wonderful in autumn. Walking around, you can find yourself at a flea market or an apple festival in someone else’s backyard. Estonia is a multi-cultural country where you can meet people with different backgrounds, and it is a great place to start a career.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Wellness and Spa Service Design and Management

Why did you choose to study this programme?

Even before I finished my bachelor studies in Hotel Management, I already started searching for master programmes abroad. I was pretty sure that I would continue with the same programme somewhere else, but then I discovered this one – the world’s only master's in the field of Wellness and Spa Management. I realised that it could be a great opportunity for me to specialise in this area and combine it with my existing knowledge regarding tourism industry. Internship opportunity and tuition-waiver scholarships were also among the factors that determined my decision.

Why Estonia?

To be honest, I was never thinking about studying in Estonia before, as for me, just like for most of the foreigners, Estonia is something relatively unknown. Actually, ranking of the university, description of the programme, but also an extensive number of foreign students studying here, attracted me to come and start discovering the country on my own. Pärnu is a cozy coastal town, twice smaller than Tartu, but only 2-3 hours away from Tallinn, Tartu and Riga. In fact, it is the country’s most important spa destination, where you can learn a lot about your field of study, and not only by regular study visits, but also by experiencing the wellness yourself.

PROGRAMMEMaster's in Innovation and Technology Management

Why did you choose to study this programme?

“The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data.” It stays true now, and for the near future. The programme I study provides a multi-disciplinary approach towards learning the technological changes and ways to deal with them. This course covers different aspects of knowledge such as innovation, information, and data. The programme shares the essence of distinctive nature of learning, when being an engineer I interact with my colleague with economic backgrounds, and together we brainstorm over eccentric ideas and solutions.

Why Estonia?

Estonia is a hidden gem in the world. It seems to me, Estonia already knows the future. The ideas of e-residency, startup incubators, and continual emphasis on innovating new things and solutions keep everyone engaged. From an Indian perspective, we need each other: Estonia has the technology, we have people who need them. Together, we fulfill each other.

PROGRAMMEMaster's in International Relations and Regional Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I have always hated choosing what interests me most. Especially since there are so many things that I wish to know more about. During my bachelors degree, I finally narrowed my interests down to two topics. However, it simply was not feasible stay in the Netherlands and focus on both fields. The University of Tartu has given me the opportunity to focus on both, as I am now learning about Russia and Eurasia, as well as, international relations.

Why Estonia?

I had been looking for masters within and outside of the Netherlands for a while, when I found the IRRS programme at the University of Tartu. I have always loved the idea of moving abroad. Especially since my exchange semester during my bachelors had been so much fun. Although my knowledge about Estonia was rather limited before moving here, the chance to experience a new country proved to be interesting enough to take a leap of faith and move to the other side of Europe.

Why Estonia?

I was primarily inspired by the programme I have chosen. I discovered that the University of Tartu is highly ranked in the world and several disciplines in particular. Upon doing some research, I learned more about the country and was pleasantly surprised how forward-thinking and progressive it seems to be. PROGRAMME: Democracy and Governance (currently Politics and Governance in the Digital Age)

Why did you choose to study this programme?

Back in my home country, I was working as a journalist for a couple of years. I was covering quite a lot of political events, and that’s how I got interested in politics and governance issues as such. While reading the descriptions of Democracy and Governance programme, I realized that it’s exactly what I needed to broaden my mind and get a deeper understanding on how our government works. Time has passed, and now I’m even thinking of not working in the field of journalism but rather in political decision-making because the university has provided me with sufficient knowledge for that.

Why Estonia?

While doing my first degree in journalism at Voronezh State University (Russia), I went to the University of Tartu as an exchange student. Even though at that time I was not really interested in politics, I attended some other courses, and I really liked the way the teaching process is organized here. The city’s spirit also impressed me, and I made so many good friends here, so I decided to apply to the University of Tartu.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Philosophy

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I have always been interested in eternal questions such as how our world works and how human thinks, so I chose philosophy for my bachelor studies in Ukraine and after finishing I realised that philosophy has become my real passion. I really enjoy how philosophy develops a wide world view, a critical thinking, and respect to different positions. I think that nowadays, in the epoch of technologies people really need all these skills to better understand information, to wisely choose what believe and how to rationally argument your own position. I also think that everyone earlier or later asks oneself what is the sense of life and how we should live, and only philosophy can help with this questions.

Why Estonia?

I have my best friend from Estonia and she always described me this country as really beautiful and cozy, so I decided to travel here to see it with my own eyes and…I fell in love with this culture, language, nature, and people. So I promised myself that one day I will return and here I am.

I also studied in the International Summer School at the University of Tartu last summer and was impressed by the high level of teaching, interesting materials, and real international student atmosphere of the town. I was also impressed by the amount of the scholarships for the international students.

Why Estonia?

First of all, because I was able to find this programme here. PROGRAMME: Master's in International Relations and Regional Studies

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I chose the IRRS programme because it interacts well with my BA degree in European Studies. I regard it as a convincing opportunity to set my former studies, which were very much centred on (Western) Europe only, into the broader context of international relations. Apart from that, I enjoy the high level of applicability and relevance of what I am going to study because the manner in which states interact is having an essential impact on everyone’s daily life. Moreover, Tartu makes it possible for me to focus on Russia and Eurasia; a region which has fallen short in my previous studies. The combination of Tartu’s location with its international study environment was another reason for me to apply to this programme.

Why Estonia?

The reason I am in Tartu at the moment is because I spent my Erasmus here last autumn and I enjoyed my stay very much. I chose Estonia in the first place because I participated in a buddy programme for exchange students at my former university and my buddy happened to be Estonian. This was the first time I got in touch with this kind of mysterious place I had not really been aware of before and I became curious to learn more about it. Plus, I love snow. Finally, in Tartu, I found a place where I felt genuinely at home which is why I came back. I am excited about the opportunity to spend more time here, get to know the country and town even better and share my experiences.

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I have always had a keen interest in Economics, even though my major of Bachelor was not in that field. During my exchange study at the University of Tartu, I was trying to be more and more close to my goal, then I found Quantitative Economics programme, which is what I am interested in and also can help me to achieve my pursuit in career. That’s why I am now taking this programme and enjoying to conquer every challenge and difficulty I meet.

Why Estonia?

Firstly, during my study at the University of Tartu, I was impressed by the high quality of teaching and the enjoyable academic atmosphere. Here provides me the opportunity to study Economics from a more international perspective. Secondly, the environment of Estonia attracted me so much. The air is absolutely fresh, and you can enjoy the pure white snow surrounding you, which is how winter should be to me. Thirdly, Estonian language sounds really beautiful and rhythmical. Although it is quite difficult to learn, I’m still enjoying learning it. Finally, here you can make friends from all over the world. Some of them can even be your lifelong friends. You know how sad it will be if you have to go home and leave them, so I just decided to come back and continue my life here.

PROGRAMME: Master's in EU-Russia Studies (the programme is no longer available, please check International Relations and Regional Studies instead)

Why did you choose to study this programme?

With my MA diploma in Russian translation and Russian Culture and Literature, I wanted to broaden my views from linguistic and social perspective to more political and economic approach to important subjects such are the relations between Russia and European Union. As a Croatian citizen I became aware of the problems which occur on everyday basis in relations with Russia. I want to understand European and Russian policy makers and be able to critically analyze current affairs among them. This is a unique programme which I believe offers the dual perspective and analysis of EU-Russia relations.

Why Estonia?

Estonia is a charming country and, despite the cold weather, very warm welcoming for foreigners. First time I came across with Estonia one and a half year ago and that was the decisive point where I realized I want to go back some day in order to explore more of what Estonia has to offer.

Moreover, its unique geopolitical position as a border state between the East and the West is helping me to understand its turbulent history and modern way of living. Also, there is no better country to study EU-Russia relations than Estonia. As a person from south of Europe, I find the northern culture, climate and traditions as something so different from what I am used to in an extremely positive way. Every day there is something new to explore and learn about, which is exactly what I find the most interesting about Estonia.

PROGRAMME: Bachelor's in Business Administration

Why did you choose to study this programme?

The main reason was my passion about entrepreneurship already in my high school in Latvia. I was sure about the direction of my BA studies, namely business or finance, and BBA programme at the University of Tartu offered a great opportunity to cover the essence of business management and finance at the same time in an international environment.

Why Estonia?

First of all, the University of Tartu is the highest ranked university in the Baltic States and it is a pretty good reason to come over. Second, Tartu is only 256 km away from my hometown, therefore I like the idea of studying abroad, but at the same time being close to home. Worth to mention that Estonia (especially Tartu) right now is very start-up oriented country, which makes it very attractive for business-minded people.

PROGRAMME: PhD in Engineering and Technology

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I spent my last 3 years in Estonia abroad. I did Erasmus as an intern and then I was accepted in a master's programme also at the University of Tartu.  Why not do my PhD studies in UT as well? I chose Engineer and Technology programme because it allows me to work in the same lab group and keep working in the same research topic of my great interest.

Why Estonia?

I chose Estonia based on a list that my supervisor, in my previous university, gave to me mentioning that would be the best universities to do my internship. I thought that could be interesting know a new country and culture that didn’t know much about it. I enjoyed my life here so much that I decided to stay at least 4 years more.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Baltic Sea Region Studies (the programme is no longer available, please check International Relations and Regional Studies instead)

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I did my BA on European Studies, which covered European Union back in my home country. Thanks to my studies, I decided to narrow down and specialize in one of the regions of the European Union. Thus, after doing some research I found Estonia and the University of Tartu, which offered master’s programme Baltic Sea Region Studies. I chose this programme because by studying Baltic Sea region, I could also experience and see those countries with my own eyes. There is a proverb in my country: “It is better to see, rather than hearing 100 times”.

Why Estonia?

My motto is ‘no matter which country, or institution becomes your destination learn as much as you can’. I chose Estonia, because my country and Estonia had some similar historical path, such as being part of the USSR. I wanted to compare and know how a small country like Estonia could develop so fast within few years. Even though Estonia is a small country, it offers so many things.

PROGRAMME: Master's in Semiotics

Why did you choose to study this programme?

I had spent last year studying abroad in Estonia, and took some Semiotics courses. I felt the programme really helped expand on my previous knowledge and allow me to take an entirely new outlook on studying language and culture. I focus on studying minority languages and culture, and Semiotics allows me to look at culture and politics at an internal level.

Why Estonia?

I chose Estonia based on a language project I did my Freshman year of my Linguistics bachelors. I had to present on a language which also included giving some facts about the country. I was given Estonian language, then found the language and the culture to be truly interesting. So when applying for study abroad I though why not. Now I am back for another 2 years.
